There was a time when the grand hotels of New Hampshire’s White Mountains beckoned the well-to-do for stays that lasted an entire summer season. Those days may be long gone but three hotels – one of them a survivor and another a reincarnated 21st century version of a 19th century hotel – remain.

The Granite State’s ethos is “Live Free or Die” and that tells you something about America’s ninth state. Divided into three distinct regions—the forested White Mountains in the north, the hills and lake region of the central and southern expanses, and the coastal lowlands bordering the Atlantic Ocean—New Hampshire packs a punch for such a petite state in New England.

Often over-shadowed by the state's popular tourist centers of the White Mountains and Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's cities don't get as much attention. But they are filled with attractions and things to do, making them perfect destinations for relaxing weekend getaways.

Nothing says “It’s Almost Summer!” like the reopening of a beloved resort on Memorial Day weekend — especially following a $3.5 million renovation and redesign. Such is the case at New Hampshire’s White Mountain Hotel, where visitors will find all 80 guest rooms and suites outfitted with new furniture, mattresses, TVs, doors, lighting, and bathrooms designed in colors and fabrics that take inspiration from views of the surrounding mountains.

In many ways, the pandemic is a story that accentuates the haves and the have-nots. Real estate, investment companies and construction surged but lodging, restaurants and performance venues suffered immeasurable losses.

The long-awaited opening of the 80-room, four-story Home2Suites by Hilton North Conway took place Oct. 5.

Since having my daughter, I find having a hotel room with a balcony helpful as it gives my husband and I a place to go during naps or an early night in. I found a lot of beautiful hotels and resorts in the North Conway area but only the White Mountain Hotel and Resort appeared to offer a room with a balcony.

The White Mountain Hotel & Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire has reopened after undergoing a $3.5 million renovation to all of their 80 guest rooms. Resort owners Gary and Carol Sullivan said the renovation project was a lot of work, with the hotel closing but the results were well worth the effort, time and expense.
